Coast Guard ice breaker vessels patrolled the Hudson River in New York on January 6 as temperatures plummeted and the east coast braced for the impact of a so-called “bomb cyclone”.

The National Weather Service warned that freezing temperatures meant that black ice was likely on New York roads during the night of January 9, but said that temperatures were expected to rise above the freezing mark during the late morning. Credit: DVIDS/PO3 Steven Strohmaier via Storyful
